MashUp: The Birth of Modern Culture

Regular price $82.00

From the moment Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque undertook the revolutionary gesture of adding a rectangle of floral wallpaper or a newspaper headline to their compositions, they initiated an immediate and fundamental shift in European art. The resulting explosion of mashup strategies—from dub music to screenprint assemblage, remixed literature to machinima—offers the clearest evidence of the relevance of this process to the growth of modern culture during the 20th century, and its dominance in the 21st century.

MashUp presents an international survey of mashup culture from the past 100 years, including hundreds of works from artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, Maison Martin Margiela, Barbara Kruger, Quentin Tarantino, Dara Birnbaum, Nam June Paik, Brian Eno, Gu Wenda, Andy Warhol and Hito Steyerl; essays from Dawn Ades, Olia Lialina, David Katz, Melanie O’Brian, DJ Spooky, Michael Darling, Stephanie Rebick and Bruce Grenville, among several others; and more than 250 full-colour illustrations.

Co-published by the Vancouver Art Gallery and Black Dog Publishing on the occasion of the exhibition MashUp: The Birth of Modern Culture, an exhibition organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery; curated by Daina Augaitis, Chief Curator/Associate Director, Bruce Grenville, Senior Curator, and Stephanie Rebick, Assistant Curator; and presented from February 20 to June 12, 2016.
