The pattern on this striking silk twill square scarf was inspired by a late 18th–early 19th-century silk badge. By imperial Ming dynasty decree of 1391, decorative embroidered squares were sewn on the garments of Chinese government officials. The fanciful leopard indicated the third military rank during the late Qing dynasty.
